Computer Science Quotations

Computing science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

I don’t need to waste my time with a computer just because I am a computer scientist.

It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to students that have had prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration.

The use of COBOL cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense.

The purpose of computing is insight, not numbers.

An algorithm must be seen to be believed.

In fact what I would like to see is thousands of computer scientists let loose to do whatever they want. That’s what really advances the field.

People think that computer science is the art of geniuses but the actual reality is the opposite, just many people doing things that build on each other, like a wall of mini stones.

The hardest thing is to go to sleep at night, when there are so many urgent things needing to be done. A huge gap exists between what we know is possible with today’s machines and what we have so far been able to finish.

Epigram 2:

Functions delay binding; data structures induce binding. Moral: Structure data late in the programming process.
